A classics degree is not typical training for a career in financial services. I am a classicist, but I have not come across many others during my involvement in the world of pensions, although Lawrence Churchill is one (I would be delighted to hear from any others). But a classical training does give you a good grasp of language, and a word the ancient Greeks were very fond of was ‘conflict’. In the ancient world, a conflict was a real humdinger of a disagreement – the Trojan War is a good example.

Those who saw little impact from this surprise change to tax laws cited low numbers of members that would be affected. Several also said it was too early to tell. A few were very worried.
