Tax credits may harm pensioners in the long run

First, the good news. The pension lobby has been successful both in mobilising and strengthening voter concerns about how pensioners fare in our society. Pensioners themselves have, as part of this success, not been inactive. Any set of general election turnout figures will show pensioners are more likely to vote than any other group. Voters five years off state retirement age, and those already claiming, made up a clear majority of voters at the last two elections.

No quick fix for chronic pensions illness

The chronic pensions problem will not be turned around with belt-tightening and austerity. We will need to continue taking the medicine well after the financial deficit has been fixed.
